What We've Been Up To
Mining and Indigenous Rights: A Film and Conversation with the Western Shoshone
- Date: Wednesday, October 10th
- Times: 12-1 in Student Center 210 and 5-6:30 in Bannan 404
- On Wednesday October 10th, members of the Western Shoshone Nation, including famed activist Carrie Dann, visited the Seattle University Campus. As seen in the recent film, “Our Land, Our Life,” the Western Shoshone have struggled through a long history of mistreatment and injustice at the hands of the US Government. More atmospheric nuclear tests have been conducted on Shoshone land than on any other site in the world, and today strip-mining operations destroy their ancestral sites without proper regulation or consent. In 2005, the Western Shoshone won a court case in the United Nations that urged the United States to cease any action on Shoshone Land and enter into dialogue with tribal leaders. The United States has yet to respond.
3rd Annual Hunger Banquet: A Meal in Solidarity with the World
- Date: Thursday, October 18th
- Location: Casey Commons
- The Seattle University Oxfam Club hosted a hunger banquet in the Casey Commons. More than 60 people joined us for a free meal and a great conversation. Our focus for this year's banquet was the Farm Bill - a piece of US legislation that affects food and hunger not only domestically, but also in the international community. The farm bill, which is currently stalled in the Senate, determines food stamp and school lunch programs, conservation guidelines and crop subsidies for the next five years. As shown in "The Omnivore's Dilemma," the current system is very damaging and deserves careful reconsideration. For more information, please visit Oxfam America.
Theo Chocolate Factory Tour
- Date: Sunday, November 18th at 1 p.m.
